University of Lucknow, one of the leading universities in the country, is located within the administrative and legislative capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow. Else ways known as Lucknow University, it has grown out primarily from the prestigious Canning College of Lucknow. Besides, other two major colleges of Lucknow have also put their solid efforts in the establishment of the University. Within twenty five years of its inception, the university has expanded after getting generous support from the Govt. of UP & Taluqdars. Presently occupied within a huge campus of 75 acres and a royally structure distinctive and elegant building, it constitutes 101 affiliated colleges under its huge umbrella. The University has been affiliated and accredited from a number of associations like UGC, ACU, AIU, DEC, NAAC, NCTE, and BCI for conducting excellent educational degrees in distinctive array of subjects.
With its establishment, the University started offering higher educational teaching in Arts, Science, Commerce, Law and Medicine. Currently, it conducts higher educational programmes in a wide spectrum of faculties, namely, arts, commerce, science, education, law, fine arts, management and Ayurveda. These faculties impart various undergraduate, post graduate, management, diploma, and PhD programmes which ensure that aspiring students should enrich their education with high level of accuracy by keeping pace with the national and international educational scenario. Along with various regular courses, the University has added a number of vocational courses to its curriculum extending its horizon of education.
Located in an eye-catching campus, the University of Lucknow life offers endless feast in terms of education, sporting and cultural activities. Students beyond their classrooms have countless opportunities for involvement and extra-curricular enjoyment. From its very inception, the University strives to offer a system of quality higher education which is rigorously intellectual and socially relevant. Tagore Library, the University’s central library, has a collection of lakhs of books and thousands of journals and copies of approved PhD & D Litt dissertations. The library is also accessible through the Internet via its own website. The Student’s Union of the University takes care of the productive activities like national seminars on useful topics and organization of social camps. Several other wings create numerous possibilities and looks after the extra curricular and employment needs of the students.
Hon’ble Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, K.C.I.E. of Mahmudabad first brought up the idea of settling a university in the political capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow. The then appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the United Provinces, Sir Harcourt Butler, further took initiatives for establishment of the University in 1919. After passing through several other procedures, the Lucknow University Act No. of 1920 received the assent of the Lieutenant-Governor in 1920. After construction of the Court of the University, Executive Council, the Academic Council, and Faculties, teaching in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, and Law was started in Canning College and Faculty of Medicine in King George’s Medical College and Hospital in 1921. As such, King George’s Medical College, Canning College and Isabella Thoburn College took lead in placing the foundation stone of the University.
