Central University of Tibetan Studies
Originally named as Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS), Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS) wasinitiated with the aim of imparting quality education to the young Tibetan Diaspora and those residing at Himalayan border regions of India as they are more familiar with Tibetan religion, culture and language. The prestigious University came into existence in the year 1967 and since then, it has been educating the aspirants amidst calm and pleasant surroundings of the holy city, Sarnath in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. It boasts of an excellent campus away from the noise and disturbance which ensures education-friendly ambience and has outstanding infrastructure, blended with state-of-the-art facilities. Central University of Tibetan Studies is known for its philanthropic and unbiased education service across the world as it welcomes students, not a distinct religion or culture.
Educational Streams
The University has a wide range of Pre University (PU), Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Doctorate programmes in Baudh Dharshan, Tibetan Astrology, Tibetan Fine Arts, Tibetan Medicine, and Tibetan Jyotish Shastri. The programmes of the University are being imparted under its eleven departments, namely, Bhot Jyotish Vidya, Bon Sampradaya Shastra, Classical and Modern Language, Mool Shastra, Sampradaya Shastra, Sanskrit, Social Sciences, Sowa Rigpa, Tibetan Languages and Literature, Tibetan Traditional Woodcraft, and Tibetan Traditional Painting. Central University of Tibetan Studies has brought together knowledgeable faculty members from different parts of the world to render high standard academics. The University is known for its academic module as the courses offered under its umbrella are well researched and help young aspirants to communicate with the Tibetan culture, religion and its memorable history.
Facilities
The University has world-class infrastructural facilities and provides salubrious ambience for flawless studies. A central library with a huge collection of books, journals and thesis written on Tibetan studies is placed in the premises of the University. In addition, it boasts of spacious classrooms, equipped with audio- visual facility and has internet connectivity to obtain the latest updates. Various national and international conferences are held at the University’s conference rooms which are built over a large area and have requisite sitting capacity. To make sure of the health and fitness of the students, the University provides healthcare services and has facilities of indoor and outdoor games.
History
The first Prime Minister of India, Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru and His Holiness “Dalai Lama” had sown the seeds of Tibetan studies in India which later grew up into Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS). Before the inception of the University, it was formerly known as Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS). It started functioning as a constituent college of Sampurnananda Sanskrit University in 1967, and later in the year 1977, it became an autonomous body under the Department of Culture, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
