Bhatkhande Music Institute University

Bhatkhande Music Institute University is amongst the prestigious music institutions in India and is known for its sincere efforts of keeping Indian classical music alive even in the modern era. The University was intiated as a music school but was transformed into a University in the year 2000. Since then, it has been rendering music education to the aspirants. It is named after one of its founders, Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande Ji, as he and Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar Ji led the foundation of the University. It is located in the capital district Lucknow of Uttar Pradesh and has a sprawling campus, spread over luxuriant green land.
 
Educational Streams
Bhatkhande Music Institute University has two sections - a University section and Diploma section. Under the University section, it renders various bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate programmes, whereas under diploma section, distinguished diploma programmes are conducted with the titles of Praveshika, Parichay, Prabuddha and Parangat. The University has four faculties, namely, Vocal, Melody, Instrumental and Dance, which are further classified into Classical, Semi-Classical and Light Vocal (Gayan), Swaravadya and Talavadya in Instrumental (Vadan) and Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Manipuri and Folk in Dance (Nritya) departments. Swaravadya has seven instruments (Sitar, Sarod, Violin, Guitar, Sarangi, Flute and Harmonium or Keyboard)) and Talawadya has two instruments (Tabla and Pakhawaj). Special courses for exclusive training in Dhrupad-Dhamar, Thumri singing and Light music, which includes music composition and direction, are also offered by the University.
 
Facilities
To render smooth and flawless education, Bhatkhande Music Institute University provides all requisite facilities to the students. Audio-video library with world class equipments has also been started by the University. In addition, the University has a girl’s hostel comprising of 32 rooms, which can accommodate up to 50 students. Also, the University provides excellent surroundings which are significant for education.
 
History
The University has a remarkable history as it was started as a music school in the year 1926 by Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande Ji with the help and co-operation of Rai Umanath Bali and Rai Rajeshwar Bali and other music patrons and philanthropic personalities of Lucknow. The then Governor of Awadhi, Sir William Marris, inaugurated the institute and was named after him i.e. Marris College of Music. In the year 1966, Government of Uttar Pradesh took over the institute under its radar and named it “Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music”. Finally in the year 2000, Government of India elevated its stature and referred it as a “University”. The University is registered under the Society Act 1860 and is an autonomous institution.
