A prestigious university of India, Aligarh Muslim University is situated in Aligarh city of Uttar Pradesh. Popularly referred to as AMU, it is considered as a principal Muslim institution of India, drawing numerous students from across the globe, particularly Africa, West Asia, and South-East Asia. This residential academic university is controlled by the Government of India and is reputed for delivering quality education since its inception during the British Raj. The excellent academics and disciplined environment are the prime reasons for attracting several students. It is one of the two universities to have earned the title of Oxford of the East and is also the only university in India which has high schools in its domain.
 
Educational Streams
AMU renders academics at international level standards through a team of highly qualified and proficient academicians in various disciplines such as Arts, Science, Management, Engineering, Medical and other professional and language departments. With over 280 courses in different traditional and modern branches of education, AMU stands proudly as one of the leading institutions for higher learning not just in India, but in South-East Asia for both Indian and international students. The University has produced some highly distinguished Muslim scholars and leaders who have served the society through their works and knowledge. It is planning to set up regional centres in various parts of India in the near future, in Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Katihar (Bihar), Murshidabad (West Bengal), Malappuram (Kerala), and Pune (Maharashtra).
 
Facilities
AMU is ideally positioned in the environment friendly locale and incorporated with state-of-the-art facilities. The University has been equipped with elegant hostels, medical centers, guest house, library, and computer center, and sports facilities. The hostels are well outfitted with all requisite amenities, providing the feel of a home away from home. It is home to Maulana Azad Library, the second largest University Library of Asia, with more than 11.5 lakhs books and documents.
 
History
AMU was established as Mohammedan Anglo Oriental (MAO) College by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1875. Initially the college was affiliated to Calcutta University and was later transferred to Allahabad University in 1885 and finally declared a Central University by an act of Indian Parliament in 1920. Establishment of MAO College initiated higher education in India during the British rule and hence, was considered as the first significant response of Indian Muslims to the challenges of post 1857 era.
